Summer Greetings Appleton-Milan Families!

My hope is that this greeting finds you all healthy and enjoying these gorgeous summer days!  I am so excited to embark on another school year in the Lac qui Parle Valley School District.  As you all know, we have two fairly large challenges to overcome as we plan and prepare to open our building this year.

  1. The COVID-19 Pandemic

  2. The Appleton-Milan Elementary School Building Project~Renovation and Addition

Please know that both of these challenges will not keep us from creating a safe and wonderful learning environment for all of our students.

On Wednesday, August 5th, the School Board voted to begin the school year using in-person learning.  They also approved a district-wide Return to Learn Plan which can be found here, LQPV's Return to Plan.  Additionally, I am working with building staff to create a detailed Return to Learn Plan specifically for Appleton-Milan Elementary.  The goal of this plan will be to create a safe learning environment for all students and staff.  Since the pandemic is an ever-evolving situation, the creation of this plan is taking time as we want to ensure we have covered all of our bases.  This plan will remain fluid.  Heather Piotter, our district nurse, and the administrative team will follow guidance from Countryside Public Health, the MN Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control if we need to make any changes to our learning model.  We may need to transition to either a Hybrid Model or Distance Learning Model based on guidance from these organizations.  Ultimately, the goal is to share the more detailed plan for our building on Monday, August 17th.

Regarding the building renovation and addition project, as of today, August 11th, we are scheduled to open school on time in our current location.  If that changes, information will be posted on this and the district websites.  Throughout the school year, contractors will be working to complete the addition.  We will move into the addition for the start of next school year~very exciting!

In the meantime, I encourage you to check out your child’s supply list here, and start practicing wearing masks as this will be one of the requirements for all staff and students once we return to school.

Thank you for supporting your child through this process.  The staff at Appleton-Milan Elementary School is anxious to get the school year started!

Always learning,

Maureen Heinecke~Appleton-Milan Elementary Principal
